Hi Everyone!
Today I recommend you the book "A Field Guide to the Families and Genera of Woody Plants of North west South America : (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru) : With Supplementary Notes on Herbaceous Taxa."
This field guide is first ever to deal with the extraordinarily diverse flora of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and adjacent areas. All known families that contain woody, epiphytic, or scandent species (plus important herbaceous genera) in northwestern South America are included. Gentry incorporated much of his practical field experience into this book to present a new approach to the identification of tropical plants.
Rather than a traditional dichotomous key, the book includes an extensive key to the families that takes the user through the most relevant characters and possible taxonomic choices, much as one would do with a student in the field. An account for each family includes characteristics useful for recognizing that family; and for most families, each genus is listed with a few of its most outstanding characteristics and hints for distinguishing it from related genera. Instead of relying heavily on seasonally occurring features such as flowers and fruits for his identifications, Gentry focuses on characters such as bark, leaves, and odor that are present year-round.
Generic listings indicate the number of neotropical species, and common names are included for many of them. Most woody genera are illustrated in 291 black-and-white plates that contain thousands of drawings, and indices of common and scientific names are provided.
Alwyn Gentry was one of the world's foremost experts on the biology of tropical plants. He was senior curator at the Missouri Botanical Garden, and was a member of Conservation International's interdisciplinary Rapid Assessment Program (RAP) team, which inventories the biodiversity of the most threatened tropical areas. From 1967 to 1993 he collected more than 80,000 plant specimens, many of them new to science.
This is photocopied version, but I strongly recommend you to buy the book. It is an excellent tool for any field botanist.
